Data collected from the Daintree Rainforest Camera Traps over the month of October 2020, accrued 36-cassowaries, 135-dingoes and 43-feral pigs. As aggregated percentages, cassowaries were 57% down for the month, dingoes were 474% up and feral-pigs were 34% down.
Dingo numbers were skewed, because Camera Trap # 10 has clearly taken the interest of a family that made 120-appearances across the month, many meddling with the camera itself. When I collected the data-card today, both fastening clips had been released and the door & camera were rotated 180-degrees in the opposite direction to where they were set. Also, the webbing that holds the camera to its tree-trunk, was severely mauled.
Cassowary numbers were understandably down, with the majority of the males nesting, whilst pig-numbers were also low for the lack of water in the Daintree dry-season lowlands.
Camera Traps – September 2020 – image highlights for the month of September
There was only one sighting of a Bennett’s Tree-Kangaroo for the month of October, but then again, the camera-trap with the most historical sightings had a dud data-card for the latter half of the month. I have included a recorded image of an Australian Brush-Turkey – Alectura lathami (J.E. Gray, 1831), not because it is the first to be captured, but because it is the best image so far.
